President's Report

GBTA-WI President - Emily Wright, Fox World Travel

We are entering a season of change and fall celebrations!

Robert Zimmerman, our GBTA-WI President for the 2017-2018 term has accepted a fantastic position as the Director of Sales at the Sheraton Chapel Hill, in North Carolina.  This was a very quick and exciting process for Robert and his family.  He accepted the position at the end of September and made notice to our board at the beginning of October.  We are sad to see Robert go as he has been such a fantastic leader for us; while at the same time, we share in his excitement for his new opportunity in NC.

We reviewed several different opportunities to fill the President position; ultimately a motion was put forward by the board to nominate me as the President for the remaining term, and by unanimous vote I became your President again. Our GBTA-WI Chapter along with all of you are very important to me and it is a true honor to be able to support our leadership team again. This is a dynamic organization with such fantastic travel industry professionals leading our GBTA-WI Chapter, I am excited to see what we will do over the next year!

The President position along with all the Board positions will be up for election next fall; where we will elect a new Board of Directors. Start thinking about stepping forward to be on the leadership team (board or committee chair); it is such a rewarding experience both professionally and personally.  I highly recommend it!  =)

November is the month where we celebrate all the wonderful volunteers for our organization!  It takes a community of hard working, dedicated, and passionate professionals to make this organization what it is.

We will recognize our Volunteers at our November meeting as well as distribute the Direct and Allied President’s Awards. The money that was budgeted for the awards was donated to the Hurricane Relief efforts in September; the board voted to make a positive impact in our world community.

Looking forward to seeing you at the November Chapter Meeting! Please let me know if you have any questions regarding the change in leadership or if I can assist you in any way.

Make it a Great Day!

Membership News

Membership Coffee Talk

By Jennifer Terpstra

It’s that time of year for football, hot apple cider…and budget season!  I hope you plan to include a membership to GBTA Wisconsin in your budget.  Community Membership will not change, so it will be the same price of $175 for 2018.  I’ve been looking up other local Wisconsin Associations, and by far, we are one of the least expensive associations in the state!

Also, keep in mind – the membership is part of your organization, so if you cannot make it to the meetings, you can send someone from your organization in your place.

The GBTA National convention is planned for August 2018, so if you are planning to attend, signing up as a GBTA All-Access member and choosing Wisconsin will get you discounts to the conventions and will cover your GBTA Wisconsin membership.  It also gets you discounts if you plan to attend any other national GBTA chapter meetings.

If you have membership or budget questions, please call me at 1-414-563-4070 or email me at

I’ll be in contact with you soon!

Direct Member News

Submited by Amy Sipsma

Happy Fall Direct Members! After a summer break, we were able to hold our Direct Member meeting after the September meeting with 13 members in attendance.  The meeting was very productive in introducing new members to the association as well as veteran members sharing their knowledge and expertise with everyone. We continued the meeting topic of duty of care into a more detailed conversation about how each of manages the hot button issue in our current roles. Additional topics included travel policy and compliance, starting a Direct Member forum, and future educational topics for the Annual Travel Conference in January.

Looking forward to another animated meeting in November in Milwaukee!

Government Update

GBTA - Wisconsin Hosts “Travel Talk” Roundtable with Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI)

By Patrick Tracey, Government Relations, Wisconsin Business Travel Association

This past August, the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) and the GBTA - Wisconsin (formerly Wisconsin Business Travelers Association) hosted our first ever, “Travel Talk Roundtable” with U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI), Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Senator Johnson’s Committee has jurisdiction over the Department of Homeland Security, the principal department responsible for immigration, counterterrorism, and border security. Many of the issues before Senator Johnson’s Committee are key priorities for the business travel community. We were joined by GBTA’s Executive Director, Mike McCormick, and Vice President for Government Relations, Andrew Meehan.

GBTA - WI members shared the business travel community’s concerns, including cost containment, traveler security, duty of care, and air traffic control reform.

Senator Johnson delivered remarks on a broad range of issues including aviation security and the importance of effective engagement on Capitol Hill. Senator Johnson noted the change in threats to aviation security and the challenges posed by ISIS fighters returning to Europe. Senator Johnson believes that the best thing Congress can do is to provide a secure homeland and grow the economy.

Late in July, the Senate Appropriations Committee passed a bill that would increase the cap on the Passenger Facility Charge from $4.50 to $8.50. The Passenger Facility Charge is a fee that consumers pay when they purchase airlines tickets. GBTA has expressed concern that taxes and fees currently comprise nearly 25% of the cost of airline tickets. The proposed increase would result in a $3.2 billion tax hike on travelers. One member noted that that the proposed increase could add a 10% markup to the cost of doing business.

GBTA - WI members also raised the issue of air traffic control reform. GBTA supports H.R. 2997, the 21st AIRR Act by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Chairman, Representative Bill Shuster (R-PA). H.R. 2997 would reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and move air traffic control operations out of the federal government and into a not-for-profit entity. Senator Johnson signaled his support for the proposal, noting that the status quo in terms of cost to the tax payer and lack of efficiencies is not beneficial to travel.

GBTA - WI looks forward to inviting our elected officials to our annual Travel Conference in January.
